DND Report

Around 6,000 to 10,000 Muslims were butchered to death just in a six-hour period on the morning of 18 February 1983. After 40 years, the Nellie massacre still needs an impartial investigation. Whosoever tried to open the dusty file was either transferred from the system or was suspended under some petty allegation.

While the official death toll of the Nellie massacre is 2,191 while unofficial data collection indicates that around 10,000 were killed.

A recent impartial data collection by a group of Indian journalists indicates that officer Zahiruddin Ahmed posted as Station House Officer (SHO) of Nowgong police station of the Assam Police had sent out a specific, written warning on February 15, 1983, that armed mobs of Lalung tribals were gathering around Muslim villages who were equipped with choppers and Kata guns (small barrel guns) and had taken an oath of the holy book to kill Muslims irrespective of age and gender. The transcript of his message was:

INFORMATION RECEIVED THAT L/NIGHT ABOUT ONE THOUSAND ASSAMESE OF SURROUNDING VILLAGES OF NELLIE WITH DEADLY WEAPONS ASSEMBLED AT NELLIE BY BEATING OF DRUMS (.) MINORITY PEOPLES ARE IN PANIC AND APPREHENDING ATTACK ANY MOMENT(.)SUBMISSION FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION TO MAINTAIN PEACE (.).

This event can be considered as the first move of purist Hindus after the 1947 division of the Indo-subcontinent for the cleansing of India of non-Hindus and then the 1984 Sikh genocide took place within the next year. The events such as the demolition of Babri Masjid, Gujarat’s anti-Muslim pogrom in 2002, and killings of Kashmiris in Indian-occupied Kashmir are part of the such commitment of purist Hindus to kill every non-Hindu in India.

People’s Review is a non-partisan journalism forum in its report stated that the massacre of Christians in Odisha in 2008, the 2013 Muzaffarnagar anti-Muslim pogrom, or the 2020 Delhi anti-Muslim pogrom are part of a series of events that show Hindus are all bent to cleanse India from non-Hindus.

Nellie massacre took place in place in 14 villages that include Alisingha, Basundhari, Borburi, Borjola, Bugduba Bil, Bugduba Habi, Butuni, Dongabori, Khulapathar, Indurmari, Matiparbat, Matiparbat number 8, Muladhari, Nellie and Silbheta.

Victims were unfortunate Bengalis who had been an eyesore in the eyes of Assamese nationalists and had been repeatedly subjected to violence and terror in Assam. Even after 40 years, nothing is changed for Muslim Bengalis living in Assam and a report published b Genocide Watch on July 17, 2018, indicated that Assam State is facing early warning signs indicating that a genocidal process is underway against Muslims.

The correspondent of Kolkata’s The Statesman newspaper Arup Chanda prepared a report of Nellie massacre and published his ground report on 12 March 1988. His report was categorical to mention that massacres against Muslims were pre-planned and sponsored by Hindu organizations.

He claimed that the Nellie massacre was a continuation of the “Bangal Khedao” movement in Assam, which began in the 1960s, and the Assam Movement of the 1970s. It was through this genocide that the All Assam Students Union (AASU), the pioneer of the Assam Movement, could sign the Assam Accord with the Union Government in 1985, acting as the representative of the people of Assam.

Unfortunately to say that no international organization is ready to investigate what Indian Hindus have planned for a long against Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians, and OIC and other Muslim multistate organizations are keeping quiet over this issue.
