BEIJING: At least 21 people including 15 police and community workers were killed in violent clashes in China’s restive western province of Xinjiang, a local official said on Wednesday.
“Twenty-one persons were killed in all… including social workers and policemen,” an official surnamed Cao from the provincial government’s news office said.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Bachu county, Kashgar, a statement on the official Xinjiang government website said.
The clashes began when officials searched homes for weapons, it said. Six “gang members” were among the dead, it said.
