25,896 suspects arrested so far across country: NAP report

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: A total of 25,896 suspects have been arrested in 24,844 operations carried out by the security and law-enforcing agencies in different parts of the country since December 24 last year, according to a latest National Action Plan (NAP) implementation report.

In a report presented to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday about progress so far achieved in implementation of the anti-terror NAP, it was stated that about 2519 suspects were arrested from Punjab, 4854 from Sindh, 14,165 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 3427 from Balochistan.

Likewise, 728 suspects were arrested from Islamabad, 176 from the Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (FATA), nine from Azad Kashmir and 15 from Gilgit-Baltistan.

In addition, 24 executions including 14 in Punjab, seven in Sindh, two in Azad Kashmir and one in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been carried out during this period.

On December 17 last year, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif lifted a six-year moratorium on the death penalty in all capital cases in the wake of a militant attack at the army-run school in Peshawar that left more than 150 people mostly school children dead.

Later, the country’s civilian and military leadership also launched a 20-point national plan of action in a bid to root out terrorism in the country.
