MUMBAI: A private bus careered off a bridge into a dry river bed in India’s western state of Maharashtra on Tuesday, that left 37 people dead and more than 15 injured, police said.
The bus was travelling from Goa to Mumbai when the driver suddenly lost control on the Bharna bridge over Jagbudi river, 190 km from Maharashtra’s capital Mumbai, and crashed into the river, said BL Shinde, an official from the highway department.
Most of the injured, including the driver, sustained head and arm injuries and were undergoing treatment at the Khed civil hospital, said the officer.
Media reports said there were some foreign tourists on the bus, but there was no immediate confirmation from the police.
