NewsModel Ayyan Ali indicted in currency smuggling case

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan: A Custom Court in Rawalpindi on Thursday indicted Ayyan Ali in the currency smuggling case, a crime which the supermodel says she didn’t commit.

The indicted was announced by the Custom Court Judge Rana Aftab Khan in the presence of Ayyan Ali and her lawyer Sardar Latif Khosa.

Meanwhile, the court reserved its decision regarding the handing over of Ayyan Ali’s passport to her.

Latif Khosa opposed the indictment of Ayyan Ali and also requested the court to hand over her passport as it will cause the cancellation of her contracts worth millions of rupees.

Ayyan Ali was taken into custody by the custom officials on March 14, 2015 at the Benazir Bhutto Airport in Rawalpindi when she was caught while carrying over US $500,000 with her to Dubai.

Initially, the model was handed over to police custody for 14-day remand and shifted to Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail. Her remand was extended multiples times and meanwhile, police failed to submit the challan against her.

On July 16, the supermodel Ayyan Ali was released on bail on the directives of the Lahore High Court (LHC) in the currency smuggling case. Later, she continued to appear before the court and her lawyer also filed a plea for Ayyan Ali’s acquittal.

But today, the court rejected the acquittal plea and indicted her for attempting to smuggle out of the country more than US $500,000.

The supermodel claims that she did not intend to go abroad with the foreign currency found in her luggage. She says that she received the money after selling some of her properties and at the airport, she was attempting to hand it over to her brother before boarding a Dubai-bound plane.
