RAWALPINDI, Pakistan: Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Babar Yaqoob on Saturday appreciated the role of Rangers who are coordinating the election commission to ensure peaceful conduct of polling in the third phase of the local bodies elections in Sindh.
“The ECP would take notice if womenfolk was barred or hurdled in taking part in the electoral process in Karachi. We would reschedule the polling in this case,” he said while talking to reporters during his visit to Divisional Public School Shamasabad here.
Answering a question, Secretary Election Commission said that Rangers are cooperating with the election commission and special task have been given to meet any eventuality during the polls.
The Secretary said “I personally met with the Director General Rangers who had assured him that every effort would be made to conduct polling in peaceful manner.”
He said that Rangers have maintained peaceful and conducive atmosphere in the disturbed areas of Karachi.
He said Chief Election Commissioner Sardar Muhammad Raza had already directed all the District Returning Officer (DROs) and other election staff to take action against those elements who were found involved in barring the women to use their constitutional right to vote.
When asked to comment on lower turnout of voters he said the turnout would increase with passage of time in Rawalpindi like other districts of Punjab and Sindh.
Commissioner Rawalpindi Zahid Saeed, District Coordination Officer DCO Sajid Zafar Dal were present on the occasion.
