ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Federal Ombudsman has finalised a plan to establish Sweet Homes in 89 jails of the country aiming to impart free food, uniform and education facilities to the juvenile inmates, Senior Advisor Federal Ombudsman Hafiz Ahsan Ahmed Khokar said Wednesday.

Talking to media, he said a Sweet Home having capacity to accommodate 50 prisoners would be inaugurated in Adiala Jail next week. Free technical education facility would be initiated for women prisoners of Multan from next week. A Sweet Home has already been established in Kot Lakhpat Jail Lahore.

He said federal ombudsman has prepared a jail reforms plan in collaboration with various organisations.

The prisoners would be provided security, better environment and computers. Computer classes have already been initiated in Quetta jail. As per project libraries would also be established in jails.

The project is being implemented with the support of various organizations including Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), Punjab University, Comsats Institute of Information Technology, National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).

He said free legal aid would be provided to over 90,000 prisoners out of whom 70,000 are under trial.

The project would ensure prompt disposal of the cases of under trial prisoners. Computerised record of under trial prisoners would be maintained.

The recitation of some verses of Holy Quran for an hour or so would be initiated soon in Adiala jail in Rawalpindi, he said.
