RAWALPINDI, Pakistan: The US special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan ambassador Richard G Olson called on the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif on Monday at the army’s general headquarters in Rawalpindi.

In a short press release, the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that the two dignitaries discussed overall regional security situation with particular reference to situation in Afghanistan during the meeting.

Olson appreciated the efforts of Pakistan in fight against terrorism.

Meanwhile, the first meeting of the Quadrilateral Coordination Committee (QCC), comprising Pakistan, Afghanistan, China and the United States, began at the Foreign Office in Islamabad aimed at reviving the Afghan peace process.

In his inaugural address at the meeting, the advisor to prime minister on foreign affairs Sartaj Aziz said that Pakistan is firmly committed to continue serious efforts for long-term peace and stability in the country.

Sartaj Aziz also called for not attaching any pre-conditions to help start the negotiation process between the Afghan Taliban and the Afghan government.

The advisor said that since the primary objective of the reconciliation process is to create conditions to bring the Taliban groups to the negotiation table, it is important to offer them incentives to persuade them to move away from using violence as tool for pursuing political goals. He said that it is therefore important that pre-conditions are not attached.
