ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Smog has been cleared in Potohar region while it still engulfs plain areas of Punjab, according to the Meteorological Office.

A light system was expected to develop in the country by this weekend which would likely to subside the smog in the plain areas, a senior meteorologist of the Met Office told the state-run news agency on Monday.

He said smog was a kind of air pollution, originally named for the mixture of smoke and fog in the air. It is a photo chemical nitrogen oxide which develops when volatile organic compound reacts with sun light developing ozone3, he added.

The meteorologist said the smog in plain areas of Punjab developed due to burning of rice crop waste. India had closed industries to counter the problem, he said.

Replying to a query, he said the option of artificial rain could be viable if any rain system was already penetrating.

“It is a very expensive procedure through which any penetrating rain system can be aggravated with spray using aircraft but without any clouds it is not workable like the current situation in the region.”

He said rains were expected in December.
