ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Ministry of Capital Administration and Development Division (CADD) will improve the reading skills of the students of capital public educational institutions through Pakistan Reading Project (PRP) funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Talking to the state-run news agency in Islamabad on Thursday, a senior official of the CADD told that the USAID funded PRP is a five-year, $160 million project with the objective to support the provincial and regional departments of education throughout the country to improve reading skills of 1.3 million children in grades I and II.
The official said that the ministry of CADD will also receive two mobile libraries from the USAID for the school children of Islamabad.
He said the main objective of the project include improving classroom learning environment for reading, developing and expanding policies and systems for reading and community-based support for reading in Pakistan.
The PRP will help enhance the vocabulary, knowledge and confidence of the students at a very young age by enhancing their access to new and useful reading material, he said.
He was of the view that the development partners should come forward to provide useful reading material and latest learning, educational gadgets to the libraries of public schools in Islamabad.
This would greatly enhance the exposure of the students, he added.
Furthermore, he said that the special education institutions of Islamabad will also be provided with special reading material to cater to the requirements of special children.
He added that the government was making efforts for the development of policy and strategies that promote an enriched culture of reading in schools, libraries and communities.
He said that under the Prime Minister Education Reform Programme, CADD has prepared a holistic training calendar for government teachers in Islamabad which will be very effective in improving the quality of public sector education in the city.
