ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Chairman National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Lieutenant General Omar Mahmood Hayat Tuesday said this year normal to below normal rainfall is predicted in the upcoming monsoon season.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony of National Monsoon preparedness conference 2017, he said more intense pre-monsoon is likely while heat wave may grip southern and central areas whereas less rainfall is expected during the monsoon season.
The Spokesman Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) Dr Muhammad Hanif sharing the seasonal forecast informed that this year overall the monsoon will be slightly week as normal rainfall is likely in July but below normal in August and September.
He said monsoon has started in South Asia but in Pakistan it usually onset in first week of July.
He shared monsoon is a global phenomena with four components, American, African, South Asian and South East Asian monsoon which collectively set the seasonal trend.
Dr Hanif further informed that less frequent rain is expected in southern and central parts of the country which might trigger drought in Sindh particularly Thar.
But, on the other hand, flash flooding, cloud burst or Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) is also warned in Northern Areas of the country during the monsoon season.
Besides that, localized system may also occur floods and heavy flash flooding in Northern and hilly areas triggering land sliding in affected areas.
Officials of Provincial Disaster Management Authorities, (PDMAs) District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs), and other stakeholders also shared their preparations to combat any untoward situation during the upcoming monsoon season.
