MARDAN, Pakistan: Unknown assailants shot dead two police personnel in Shergah area of Mardan on Monday.

Police said that the incident took place at Shagonaka Check Post where policemen signaled a suspicious car to stop but the onboard persons opened fire at the police, killing two of them.

The martyred policemen were identified as Farhad, son of Shahbaz, and Muhammad Nawar, son of Sher Muhammad.

Police said that one of the policemen died at the scene while the other breathed his last at the hospital of his wounds.

The District Police Officer (DPO) Mardan along with other police officers reached the spot after the firing incident, and directed for a search operation to nab the killers.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the ruling party in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where the incident occurred, condemned the killing of two policemen in Mardan.

Imran Khan expressed condolences over the death of policemen and also extended sympathy with the bereaved family.

“Condemn the killing of 2 policemen in shootout at police check post in Mardan. Condolences & prayers go to their families,” Imran Khan in a twitter message.
