President Aliyev orders for early presidential elections in Azerbaijan
Monitoring Desk: President Ilham Aliyev has ordered to conduct early presidential elections in Azerbaijan which will be held on April 11, 2018 instead of October 2018.
According to official media, Presidential elections in Azerbaijan will be held on April 11 and President Aliyev has directed Central Election Commission to organize early presidential elections in accordance with the Electoral Code. The presidential elections in Azerbaijan were to be held on October 17, 2018.
56-year-old Ilham Aliyev was first elected president of Azerbaijan who took office in 2003, after the death of his father Heydar Aliyev who is considered as Father of Nation for people of Azerbaijan. Heydar Aliyev was leader of the Communist Party and virtually ruled the country since 1993 till his death.
In 2009, Ilham Aliyev changed the Constitution of the country for enabling him to run for an unlimited number of presidential terms.
Strengthening the long-term power of his family, Aliyev last year appointed his wife Mehriban as the first vice-president.
It is worth recalling that last week it became known that Aliyev would become the presidential candidate from the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (New Azerbaijan).
