ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Punjab government on Friday said it had made effective legislation and solid measures for welfare of women.

In a statement issued from Lahore, the Spokesman of Punjab Government Malik Ahmad Khan said that under Punjab Zewer-e-Taleem Program, more than 400,000 students of 16 districts of South Punjab, were being awarded monthly scholarships with Rs 1,000 each.

The spokesman said women employment quota had been increased up to 15 percent and Women’s Development Department did effective legislation to ensure rights of women in heritage.

Malik Ahmad Khan said the Family Courts had also been established in that regard. He said 36,000 domestic animals had been distributed in the Punjab province to empower rural women.

His statement was issued a day after the International Women’s Day was celebrated worldwide including in Pakistan on March 8 (Thursday) with the theme “Time is Now: Rural and urban activists transforming women’s lives” to raise awareness about gender equality and empowerment of women.

In order to mark International Women’s Day, gatherings, conferences, exhibitions and festivals were held across the World.
