Elections 2013Balochistan teachers refuse to perform election duty in sensitive districts

QUETTA: Owing to threats of banned outfits in Balochistan, the Government Teachers Association (GTA) on Saturday refused to render election duty in eleven sensitive districts of the province.

There are less than two weeks in election, but campaign is yet to gain any momentum in Balochistan like Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

There are neither rallies nor meetings in the province. Election offices are giving deserted look.

In spite of all odds, candidates are still hopeful that people will come out and fully participate in the election process.

On the other hand, GTA says that teachers are receiving threats from banned organizations. Threatening messages are being written on the walls of state-run schools.

The GTA said it has apprised the caretaker chief minister, education authorities and provincial election commission, but no notice has been taken.

“Under the prevailing circumstances, we will be unable to discharge our duties on polling day,” it said.

The sensitive districts are: Kalat, Noshki, Chaghi, Makran, Panjgoor, Turbat, Gwadar, Khuzdar, Mastung and Kharan.

Meanwhile, police officials say that arrangements have been finalized to ensure peaceful polling.
