Ibrahim Mohamed Solih won Presidential Elections in Maldives

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Expressing its happiness over peaceful conduct of Maldives Presidential Elections 2018, Pakistan on Monday voiced its desire to work with the newly elected government in Male for further enhancement of bilateral partnership.

The Presidential Elections were held peacefully in Maldives on Sunday, which resulted in the victory of the Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) Candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

“Pakistan congratulates the people of Maldives on the peaceful conclusion of recent Presidential elections,” the Foreign Office Spokesman Dr Mohammad Faisal in a Twitter message on Monday.

The Spokesman added that “Pakistan fully supports the democratic process in Maldives and will work with the new government to further enhance the partnership between the two Countries.”

 Solih secured 58.3% votes in Maldives Presidential Elections

Solih defeated the incumbent President Abdulla Yameen of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) by securing 134,616 votes which were 58.3 percent of total cast votes. Whereas his opponent Abdulla Yameen bagged 96,132 votes, which were 41.7 percent of  total cast votes.

Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will be sworn-in as Maldives new president on November 17.

The turnout in the Maldives Presidential Elections remained 89.2 percent.

Prior to the presidential elections, concerns were raised about the alleged rigging following the appointment of Yameen’s loyalist Ahmed Shareef, as the Head of the Electoral Commission.
