ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Accountability Barrister Mirza Shahzad Akbar has said that the Asset Recovery Unit (ARU) has traced assets of worth US $ 5.3 billion in 10 Countries.
While addressing a joint news conference along with the Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Media Iftikhar Durrani and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Senator Faisal Javed Khan in Islamabad on Monday, Shahzad Akbar said that these assets were acquired through money laundering and fake accounts.
Shahzad Akbar said that over US $ 1.3 billion were laundered abroad through 5,000 fake accounts. He said that initially only big fish are being targeted.
The prime minister’s special assistant said that Pakistan has become the third biggest Country, whose citizens own real estate in Dubai. He said that more information will be shared with the people as the ARU deciphers the data received from various Countries including Dubai Land Authorities.
Shahzad Akbar said that in the past, work permit was used by various influential people to launder money and to dodge accountability radar.

Iftikhar Durrani said that properties worth US $ 15 billion were acquired by Pakistanis in Dubai only during the last 10 years. He said that ARU is working in collaboration with other institutions to trace the ill gotten money.
Faisal Javed Khan said that the PTI government is committed to curb corruption and money laundering at all costs as per its election manifesto.
