ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The National Assembly was told on Monday that a total of 197 mosques (masjids) were damaged in South Waziristan agency during the anti-terror operation conducted by the armed forces in the tribal region.

In a written reply to a question raised by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl’s (JUI-F) lawmaker Muhammad Jamal-Ud-Din, the Minister for States and Frontier Regions told that House that after the damage inflicted to mosques, the armed forces reconstructed and rehabilitated all of them.

The minister told that a total of Rs 98.760 million were spent on reconstruction and rehabilitation of 197 damaged mosques by armed forces.

Replying to another question by Jamal-Ud-Din, the Minister for States and Frontier Regions told that Rs 8,045 million were allocated for 27,107 damaged houses of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) of tribal areas as compensation.

The minister said that till date, survey of 49,881 houses have reportedly been completed against which Rs 7,240 million have been released to the Deputy Commissioner South Waziristan for compensation of 20,741 beneficiaries.

The states and frontier regions minister further said that the remaining cases of 29,140 are under process at different stages of completion like verification/ validation, approval of Steering Committee, entries in MIS, Desk Monitoring etc.
