Social129 Basic Education Community Schools closed in South & North Waziristan

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: As many as 129 Basic Education Community Schools (BECS) were temporarily closed in South and North Waziristan agencies due to the military operation against banned terror outfits, the National Assembly was told.

In a written reply to a question by Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal Pakistan’s (MMAP) lawmaker Maulana Abdul Akbar Chitrali, the Minister for Federal Education and Professional Training Shafqat Mahmood told that House that these BECS will be opened in near future in the aforementioned tribal areas.

Shafqat Mahmood told that presently, a total of 12,304 Basic Education Community Schools are running across the Country.

The minister told that BECS teachers are working on temporary basis and they are being paid honorarium instead of salary from BECS project. He told that the nature of job of BECS teachers is temporary subject to the needs of school in far flung specific areas.

The education minister told that replacements and shifting of BECS to new need based area is one of the prime characteristics of BECS project, once the need is over in the area.

Shafqat Mahmood further told that no steps have been taken for the regularization of BECS teachers.

In reply to another question, Shafqat Mahmood told that there is no such proposal under consideration of the government to adopt the syllabus and curriculum of private schools for Government Schools of Islamabad.
