ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: A “Conference on Protection of Minorities’ Rights” will be held in Islamabad on Wednesday under the auspices of the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ), the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), the National Commission for Justice and Peace (NCJP) and the Cecil & Iris Chaudhry Foundation (CICF).
The Conference will commence at 10:00 am and conclude at 2:00 pm on June 19, 2019 at Margala Hotel in Islamabad.
In the Conference, measures will be assessed objectively for protection of minority rights in connection with the Supreme Court’s verdict of June 19, 2014 (http://www.supremecourt.gov.pk/jsearch/Judgment/S.M.C._1_2014.pdf).
It is worth noting that the 32-page landmark judgment announced on June 19, 2014 followed a suo moto action taken by the Supreme Court of Pakistan regarding the 2013 blast in a Peshawar Church in which over 100 people were killed.
In its judgement, a three-member bench of the Apex Court led by the then Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani and comprising Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed and Justice Mushir Alam directed the federal government to constitute a National Council for minorities’ rights.
The bench also ordered the establishment of a Special Police Force to protect the places of worship of minorities.
