ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: President Dr Arif Alvi on Saturday administered the Oath to the 27th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan Justice Gulzar Ahmed in a Ceremony held at Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad.

The Oath Taking Ceremony was attended among others by Prime Minister Imran Khan, Senate Chairman Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani, Speaker National Assembly Asad Qaiser, members of the Federal Cabinet, Parliamentarians, Services Chiefs and serving and retired judges of the Supreme Court and lawyers.

Justice Gulzar Ahmed will serve as the Chief Justice of Pakistan till February 21, 2022.

President Arif Alvi appointed Justice Gulzar Ahmed, the most Senior Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, as stated a notification issued on December 4, with effect from December 21, 2019 in exercise of the powers conferred by Clause (3) of Article 175 A read with Article 177 of the Constitution.

Earlier Justice Asif Saeed Khosa retired on December 20 (Friday) as the Chief Justice of Pakistan. His tenure lasted for 347 days.

In his remarks at the Full Court Reference held at the Supreme Court in Islamabad on Friday to pay tributes to his services, Justice Khosa said that during his tenure, his approach mainly focused on improving the justice delivery system.

Justice Asif Saeed Khosa said that the principle of separation of powers was adhered to, judicial restraint was exercised and dignity and respect was ensured for all, appearing before the court.
