Elections 2013Election Tribunals to address complaints of rigging: Nizami

ISLAMABAD: Information Minister says transfer of power to the elected government will take place in accordance with the constitution.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Arif Nizami says the transfer of power to the elected representatives would take place within the period stipulated by the Constitution and the law.

Addressing a news conference with Law Minister Ahmer Bilal Soofi in Islamabad on Monday‚ he said as per Constitution the deadline for the purpose expires on 2nd of next of month and transfer of power would take place within this period.

Minister for Law said the Election Commission would issue official notification of results in a week or ten days and under article 91 of the Constitution session of the National Assembly has to be convened in 21 days from elections.

The Information Minister said despite challenges that were considered to be insurmountable by many‚ the Interim Government has been able to fulfill its responsibility for holding of general elections.

He pointed out that there were even apprehensions that elections might not take place at all.

He expressed satisfaction that women and youth took part enthusiastically in polling and the turnout was more than previous elections.

The Minister said as result of the elections‚ people have given mandate to PML (N) at Centre and in Punjab while PPP has emerged as the largest party in Sindh and PTI in KPK. He said the results have belied the perception that people will not give clear mandate to any party.

He said those who laid down their lives during electioneering were martyrs of democracy. He said no one can justify violence but the fact remains that 150 people were also killed in election-related violence in the last general elections.

Nizami said there are complaints about rigging and the Election Commission has already set up Election Tribunals to address them.

He said Pakistan Army‚ law enforcing agencies and media played vital role in making the electoral exercise a success.
