RAWALPINDI, Pakistan: The 49th Martyrdom Anniversary of Major Muhammad Akram Shaheed (Nishan-e-Haider) is being observed on Saturday.

To pay homage to the brave son of soil, a wreath-laying ceremony was held at the monument of Shaheed at Jhelum, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

The floral wreath was laid on his monument on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

Major Muhammad Akram was martyred on December 5, 1971 while fighting valiantly against the enemy. Later, he was awarded the Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistan’s highest military honour.

Separately, Pakistan army paid a rich tribute to Major Muhammad Akram Shaheed for his supreme sacrifice and displaying valour against all odds.

In a tweet, the Director-General ISPR Major General Babar Iftikhar said that Major Akram heroically repulsed innumerable attacks by the enemy inflicting heavy losses in the battle of Hilli.

“Such exemplary courage is the hallmark of defenders of the motherland,” the director-general ISPR wrote.
