PakistanPakistan opposition to stage sit-in today

ISLAMABAD: Members of several opposition parties, led by Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) leaders, are set to stage a march from Parliament House to offices of the nearby Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday (today) “to express solidarity with the ECP and demand its empowerment to ensure free and fair general election”, Dispatch News Desk (DND) reported on Sunday.

The participants in the march would stage a brief sit-in near the ECP building where some leaders would deliver speeches, Senator Mushahidullah Khan, information secretary PML-N told media.

Mushahidullah alleged that hurdles were being created in the way of the ECP which was struggling to implement the Supreme Court’s order about verification of voters’ list in Karachi.

A number of political parties including Jamat-e-Islami (JI), Sunni Tehrik (ST), Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP), Awami League (AL), PML (Functional), Qaumi Watan Party of Aftab Ahmed Sherpao and some nationalist parties of Sindh and Balochistan have announced to join the PML-N in their protest.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) Chief, Mulana Fazal-ur-Rehman has refused to join the opposition in their protest.

“Since the PML-N did not support our walkout from the National Assembly against governor’s rule in Balochistan so we will also not render support to their sit-in,” Fazl said.
