AfghanistanLahore blast: Over 100 Afghan nationals arrested in police swoop

LAHORE: Police rounded up over 100 foreigners, including Afghan nationals, during an operation prompted by Saturday’s blast in Lahore’s Anarkali food street area.

Four people were killed and over 50 others, including women and children, were injured when a bomb went off in the busy food street on Saturday night. There was no claim of responsibility.

Police on Sunday kicked off a search operation in various areas, including the Old Anarkali areas, arresting more than 100 suspects, most of them afghan nationals, beefing up security on public points.

Police officials said the bomb was connected to a deep freezer in one of the restaurants.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing windowpanes smashed and furniture from the food stalls destroyed.

Lahore, the capital of Pakistan’s Punjab province, has been relatively free of violence in recent months despite a spate of bombings elsewhere in the country.
