PakistanElection won't be delayed neither my petition is meant for that: Qadri

ISLAMABAD: Cheif of Tahrik-e-Minhajul Quran (TMQ) Dr. Tahirul Qadri said on Monday that he doesn’t think that the elections would be delayed, Dispatch News Desk (DND) reported on Monday.

“The general election will not be delayed neither my petition is meant for that. What my point of view is that I just seek reconstitution of Election Commission according to the Constitution,” Qadri told media persons on his arrival outside the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC).

TMQ chief arrived at SC today on a constitutional petition he filed in the court, seeking reconstitution of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). Dr. Qadri said that it was the responsibility of the ECP to meet the transparency requirements in accordance with the constitution of Pakistan. He said that the institution, which is to ensure transparency, its own formation was not according to the constitution.

In his petition, Qadri called for fresh appointments of the Chief Election Commissioner and the four members of the ECP. He pleaded that their appointments were “not in accordance with the provisions of Articles 213 and 218 of the Constitution, hence all these appointments are illegal.”

Qadri prayed to the apex court to direct the Federation of Pakistan to appoint the CEC and ECP members immediately in accordance with the procedure laid down in Article 213(2) (a) and 218(2) (a) and (b) of the Constitution of Pakistan so that the forthcoming election might not be delayed on any pretext and conducted, fairly and in accordance with law.
