BAGHDAD: Armed men launched an assault on an army checkpoint near the Barwana town in the Iraqi western province of Anbar, killing 14 security personnel, an Iraqi official said on Thursday.
The attack took place on Wednesday evening which marked the first day of the holy fasting month of Ramadan in western Iraq.
Barwana Mayor Meyasser Abdul-Mohsin said three of the dead were standing guard at the checkpoint and 11 others were breaking their fast in a trailer.
No group has claimed responsibility for the deadly incident.
