ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) has said that  it is surprised by the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s decision to hold presidential election on July 30.

The apex court on Wednesday directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold the presidential elections on July 30. The court’s decision came on a petition filed by the ruling Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) Senator Raja Zafarul Haq, asking the court to not to hold the presidential elections during the last Ashra (10 days) of Ramazan.

The PML-N senator filed the petition in the SC after the ECP had turned down a request made by the federal government to change the date for presidential elections, saying that polls would be held on Aug 6 as already announced.

Aitzaz Ahsan, senior PPP leader and renowned law expert,  said the decision has been given without all candidates being heard.

“Even lower courts have to face scolding over such actions,” Ahsan said.

Earlier, he submitted nomination papers of Raza Rabbani in the Islamabad high court.

Speaking to reporters on this occasion, he said that it was important that Supreme Court would hear all candidates before rescheduling the presidential election.

“Raza Rabbani has authored the 18th Amendment. PPP has nominated him after deliberations,” he said.  “We will be thankful to the PML-N if it accepts Rabbani’s candidacy.”

He announced that he would contact Nawaz Sharif and other politicians to elect Raza RAbbani unanimously.
