BEIRUT: Syrian troops on Saturday found chemical agents in tunnels used by rebels fighting to oust President Bashar Assad in the Damascus suburb of Jobar, while some of forces started suffocating as they entered the tunnels, state television reported.

The state TV said that “Army heroes are entering the tunnels of the terrorists and saw chemical agents,” adding that “in some cases, soldiers are suffocating while entering Jobar.”

“Ambulances came to rescue the people who were suffocating,” it said.

On Wednesday, Syrian activists accused Assad’s forces of launching a nerve gas attack in the Damascus suburbs, killing large numbers of civilians while ruling regime has dismissed the accusation.

However, some Western powers suspect Assad’s forces to be behind the attack that the opposition claims killed anywhere between ‘dozens’ to ‘1,300’.

Meanwhile, UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Angela Kane arrived in Syria on Saturday to try to get access for the team of international inspectors to work at the site in the Damascus suburbs.
