ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Monday directed the federal government to appoint a chairman and other members for Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in the next 15 days.
Moreover, the apex court also set a thirty day deadline for the auction of 3G Telecommunication licenses.
A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry heard the 3G licence auction and appointment of PTA chairman case on Monday.
During today’s proceedings, the Chief Justice remarked that the PTA chairman and members be appointed within the next 15 days and 3G licences should be auctioned fifteen days after the appointments.
The chief justice further said that in the absence of the PTA, grey trafficking had become a billion rupee business as there was no authority to check it. He added that this might be the reason why the PTA was being stopped from becoming a regulator.
