AsiaG20 leaders fail to reach consensus over Syria

ST. PETERSBURG: Leaders of the group of twenty (G20) failed to reach a consensus on military strikes in Syria at the end of the first day of their meeting in St. Petersburg on Thursday.

During G20 summit’s first day, US President Barack Obama faced growing pressure from Russian President Vladimir Putin and other world leaders on his plan to launch military strikes against Syria.

Russia‚ China‚ the European Union and Pope Francis all warned of the dangers of military intervention in Syria without the approval of the UN Security Council.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the leaders that any military action must have the Security Council’s backing.
