ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Sunday invited his Indian counterpart Dr Manmohan Singh to visit Pakistan.

The meeting, which continued for more than an hour, held in New York on the sidelines of United Nations General Assembly session.

Adviser to PM on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Water and Power Minister Khawaja Asif and Tariq Fatimi assisted the prime minister in the talks. Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas and Pakistan’s permanent representative in UN Masood Khan were also present.

The Indian premier was accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid and other officials.

It was the first meeting between two prime ministers since Nawaz Sharif came to power after a landslide victory in the general election.

Senior journalist Absar Alam said Prime Minister Sharif has invited his Indian counterpart to visit Pakistan. He said it remains to be seen whether Indian premier will accept the invitation.

In his address to the UN General Assembly on Friday, Prime Minister Sharif said Pakistan wants a new begining with India and is keen to build on 1999 Lahore accord between two countries.

The Indian PM, on the other hand, described Pakistan as epicenter of terrorism.
