KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday issued a stay order against ban imposed by the city traffic police on motorcycle rickshaws in Karachi.

In a petition, Qingqi Association maintains that ban is illegal.

It said that laws were formally amended to introduce rickety three-wheelers on city roads. “Now thousands of qingqi rickshaws are plying on the streets in the city. It is illegal to ban them without amending the said law.”

The association warned that the ban would not only affect the livelihood of thousands of poor people and but also create problems for millions of commuters who used this mode of transport daily.

The association asked the court to declare the ban unlawful and illegal and restrain the traffic police and the administration from taking action against the motorcycle-rickshaw operators.

The traffic police chief imposed the ban on Wednesday, saying that the rickshaws were plying in the city without a legal status or documents.

A division bench of the Sindh High Court issued the stay order after initial hearing.

The court ruled that the rickshaws should be not be stopped for the time being and said that the court would take up the matter again on Oct 22.
