TEHRAN: Unknown gunmen killed 14 Iranian border guards and injured five others in clashes in a mountainous region outside Saravan, a town in southeast Iran on the border with Pakistan on Friday night, Iran’s state news agency IRNA said on Saturday.
The authorities were investigating to determine whether the attackers were drug smugglers or armed opposition groups, both of which have occasionally ambushed Iranian troops, IRNA said.
Meanwhile, Iranian authorities hanged sixteen rebels on Saturday morning in the prison of Zahedan in response to the death of border guards in Saravan, the attorney general of Sistan-Balochistan province Muhammad Marzieh said.
Marzieh said that we warned the rebel groups that any attack targeting civilians or members of the security forces would not go unanswered.
