ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Friday called for the implementation of laws to avoid sectarian conflicts like one occurred in Rawalpindi on November 15.

At least eleven persons were killed and several others sustained injures when clashes erupted between members of the Sunni and Shia communities as an Ashura procession was passing in front of a seminary in Rawalpindi’s Raja Bazaar area. The situation prompted the authorities to impose curfew and summon army to take control of the city.

A meeting ‘Unity among Ummah’ was organized over the issue of Rawalpindi carnage in Islamabad on Friday. Following the meeting, the JUI-F chief called for the implementation of laws to avoid such incidents.

“All existing laws should be implemented. If the government implements these laws, sectarian conflicts can be prevented,” he said.

The JUI-F chief also stressed the need to ban unnecessary use of loudspeakers. He said that loudspeakers should be used according to need as there unnecessary use was also a cause of concern for residents of neighbourhoods.

Fazl said that the accused arrested for their alleged involvement in attacking Mosques and Imambargahs had confessed to their crime.

The JUI-F chief further said that only transferring of officials after incidents like the Rawalpindi tragedy was not a solution to the problem.
