Pakistan reiterates its opposition to new permanent seats in UNSC

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan reiterated on Friday that it does not support an increase of permanent seats for individual states at the UN Security Council, a move that will only benefit a handful of contenders for power and privilege.

In a statement at the UN Security Council‚ Pakistan’s ambassador to the United Nations Masood Khan said that efforts must not be made to perpetuate the model of the post-World War II Security Council‚ which divided the world into the victors and the vanquished.

The ambassador said that Pakistan welcomes the interim agreement between Iran and the world powers on the nuclear standoff.

Masood Khan said that Pakistan has always maintained that Iran is entitled to certain rights in line with the provisions of Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Pakistan’s ambassador to the UN said that being an immediate neighbor‚ Pakistan has always underscored the importance of finding a peaceful long-term solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.

Moreover, Masood Khan emphasized that the UN Security Council has an important responsibility to make its contribution to the resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue.
