LAHORE: Unknown gunmen gunned down a Shia cleric Allama Nasir Abbas Multani in Lahore on Sunday night.

The 42-year-old Abbas, belonging to the Tehreek-i-Nifaz-i-Fiqh Jafaria (TNFJ), was going to his residence after attending a Majlis at Qaumi Markaz, Shah Jamal at around 11 pm when assailants on motorcycles intercepted his car near FC College underpass, opened fire and escaped.

The cleric was seriously injured in the attack and was taken to Shaikh Zayed Hospital where was pronounced dead.

Following the cleric’s murder, a large number of his followers reached Shaikh Zayed Hospital and, expressing their anger, they chanted slogans against the government and damaged the premises.

The Majlis-i-Wahdatul Muslimeen (MWM) condemned the killing of Shia cleric and announced three days of mourning.

The MWM spokesman said that the government failed to stop sectarian targeted killings. Meanwhile, Tahafuz-i-Azadari Council in Karachi also condemned the killing and slammed the government for failing to protect Shias in the country.
