MQM observes day of mourning, Karachi shuts down

KARACHI: Businesses, commercial centres and shops were shut in most parts of Karachi as a shutdown was being observed in the city on Saturday on the Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) call to observe a day of mourning across Sindh against extra-judicial killings of party workers.

On Friday, in a press conference with other members of the MQM Rabita Committee at party’s headquarter 90 in Karachi, the MQM leader Haider Abbas Rivzi announced to observe a day of mourning to protest against the extra-judicial killings of its workers.

The MQM leader said that extra-judicial killing of party workers was being carried out and demanded that authorities form a judicial commission to look into these killings.

Following the MQM’s call to observe day of mourning, the Karachi Transport Ittehad said that it would fully support MQM’s day of mourning and announced to keep public transport off the roads.

The Private School Management Association had also issued its notification for schools to remain shut. Moreover, the University of Karachi had also postponed all exams scheduled for today with new dates of these to be announced later.

Likewise, CNG stations were also closed across several parts of the city.

In Hyderabad, the second largest city in the province, shops, commercial centres and businesses remained closed.
