Sindh govt announces Rs100 million package for drought-hit Tharparkar areas

KARACHI: The Sindh government on Friday announced a package of Rs100 million for the drought-hit areas of Tharparkar district in Sindh province

The package was announced by Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah in a high level meeting held in Karachi on Friday.

The people of Tharparkar including children continued to suffer from severe shortage of food, while according to Mithi taluka hospital at least 121 children have lost their lives during a drought in Tharparkar in three months.

The Sindh chief minister talking to media representatives said that the families of the children who lost their lives in Tharpakar will receive Rs0.2 million each.

Shah also said that director health as well as the director and the deputy director livestock have been suspended. He said that the affected children were not sent to good hospitals as a result of negligence, which added to the dire situation in the district, adding that there was only one hospital in Tharparkar.

In addition, he said that the children were dying because of pneumonia and malnutrition.

Meanwhile, Chief Justice Sindh High Court (SHC) Justice Maqbool Baqar took notice of the deaths of children due to drought in Tharparkar, and sought reply from Chief Secretary, Secretary Food and Disaster Management till March 14.

The SHC chief justice directed the government to apprise the court what steps it had taken to redress the menace.
