Federal govt refuses to remove Musharraf's name from ECL: sources

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has refused to remove name of former military ruler General (retd) Pervez Musharraf from the Exit Control List (ECL), media citing sources reported on Tuesday.

On Monday, a three-member special court constituted to try the former military ruler for high treason ruled that removal of Musharraf’s name from the ECL was not its prerogative as it had not ordered for the inclusion of his name in the list.

The ruling said that it was up to the government to allow or deny the request put forward by Musharraf to be allowed to travel abroad to meet his ailing mother.

The court also indicted the former president for high treason but at the same time granted him exemption from appearing in the hearings.

Later, the counsel of Musharraf Farogh Naseem filed a formal request with the interior ministry to allow his client to travel abroad.

In his address to a news conference held after the hearing of the treason case, Musharraf’s counsel said that the special court has already clarified that the former president is not under the court’s custody and he is free to move.
