Sheikh Rasheed moves SC against Rawalpindi-Islamabad metro bus project

ISLAMABAD: The Awami Muslim League leader Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad has challenged the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro bus service project in the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Saturday, arguing that the project is largely driven by corruption and asked the apex court to order an investigation into the matter.

The Punjab government was named as a respondent in the application.

In his petition, Sheikh Rasheed further said that Murree Road was dug up, causing a lot of problems for traders who use that route to transport goods. He said that the fundamental rights of people are being violated by the project.

The request was filed under Article 184 (3) of the constitution which states: “Without prejudice to the provisions of Article 199, the Supreme Court shall, if it considers that a question of public importance with reference to the enforcement of any of the fundamental rights conferred by Chapter I of Part II is involved have the power to make an order of the nature mentioned in the said Article.”

The construction work on the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro bus project costing Rs 44.21 billion is already underway.
