Court orders police to register case against Nawaz Sharif, others

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: An additional sessions judge in Islamabad on Saturday ordered the Secretariat police to register a case against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and others over the alleged killing of three political activists on August 30.

The additional sessions judge Shahrukh Arjumand issued the order on a petition filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Besides the prime minister, others against whom the Secretariat police was ordered to register a case included Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Railways Minister Saad Rafique, Acting IGP Islamabad, IGP Punjab, IG Railways Police, SSP Operations and Deputy Commissioner.

The PTI had filed the request days after the August 30 violence but following the police’s failure to register a case, the party had approached the sessions court under clause 22-A of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) for redress.
