Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff wins another four-year term

BRASÍLIA, Brazil: The incumbent Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has been re-elected for another four years after securing more than 51 percent of votes in a closely-fought election.

The official results of the run-off presidential election held in the South American country on Sunday showed that Rousseff led opposition leader Aecio Neves by 51.6 to 48.4 percent of the vote.

The 66-year-old Rousseff, who has been in power as Brazil’s first female president since 2010, is popular with poor Brazilians because of her government’s welfare policies.

In the first round of Brazil’s presidential election held on October 5, neither candidate could secure an absolute majority as Rousseff secured 41.5 percent and Neves received 33.5 percent of the votes.
