Three-day anti-polio campaign begins in Punjab

LAHORE, Pakistan: A three-day special anti-polio campaign began in Punjab on Monday as a part of polio eradication efforts.

A total of 35,204 mobile teams are working to administer anti polio drops to 18 million children under age of five years, according to the spokesman of provincial health department.

The spokesman said that 2,254 teams have also been deputed at the entry and exit points of province as well to administer drops to the passenger children.

The provincial health department spokesman further said that all necessary arrangements are in place to administer drops at all hospitals and health centers.

Meanwhile, a female polio worker was attacked in Chowk Shah Abad in Multan on Monday.

The sources said that an attempt was made to kidnap the female polio worker. However, no further detail about the incident was received.

Pakistan, which is among only three countries along with Afghanistan and Nigeria in the world where polio still remains endemic, has witnessed 276 polio cases in 2014.

In the country, a total of 103 polio cases were reported in 2003, 53 in 2004, 28 in 2005, 40 in 2006, 32 in 2007, 117 in 2008, 89 in 2009, 114 in 2010, 198 in 2011, 58 in 2012 and 72 in 2013.
