ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The International Human Rights Day is being observed across the world on Wednesday with the theme “Human Rights 365”.
The day is observed annually across the world on December 10 to highlight the fundamental rights that all people are entitled to as a global community.
It commemorates the day in 1948 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
“I call on States to honour their obligation to protect human rights every day of the year. I call on people to hold their governments to account,” the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement.
In their separate messages on the occasion, President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that Pakistan stands committed to protect and promote human rights of every citizen.
The president said that upholding human dignity, safeguarding human rights and ensuring human freedom and equality are among the fundamental principles of Islam.
The prime minister urged the nation to join hands to fight discrimination and extremism.
Sharif said that the government is steadfastly working towards establishing equality for all human beings and an environment of peaceful co-existence and non-discrimination on the basis of caste, creed, colour, race and religion.
