Parliamentary leaders meet to finalise counter-terror plan

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: In order to finalise a national action plan to counter terrorism and extremism, a meeting of parliamentary leaders is being held in Islamabad on Wednesday with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the chair.

The federal interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan-led committee assigned with the task of formulating a national action plan against terrorism prepared the plan after holding two lengthy sessions in Islamabad.

During the sessions, the committee thoroughly discussed proposals by the joint working group.

Later, a senior Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader who attended the meetings told media that all participants were agreed on 18 point action plan given by the working group.

The PPP leader said that all parties declared support to the steps being taken by the armed forces in the fight against terror.

On Tuesday, the prime minister chaired a high level meeting in Islamabad which expressed the resolve to ensure swift and effective implementation of the approved action plan on counter-terrorism.

The meeting was attended by the interior minister, the finance minister Ishaq Dar, the Chief of the Army Staff General Raheel Sharif, the Director General Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) General Rizwan Akhtar, DG Military Operations, DG Military Intelligence and DG Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR).

It reviewed progress on operation Zarb-e-Azb going on in North Waziristan and Khyber Agencies and discussed modalities of national action plan on counter terrorism and extremism.

The meeting discussed various short term and medium term steps required to be taken for eliminating terror networks in every nook and corner of the country.

The prime minister said that operation Zarb-e-Azb will continue till the last terrorist is eliminated. He said that no distinction will be made between those who have committed the acts of terror and those who harbour, facilitate and finance them.
