KARACHI, Pakistan: Unknown gunmen riding a motorcycle shot dead a policeman on duty to protect a polio vaccination team in Orangi Town area of Karachi on Monday.
The sources said that the assistant sub inspector (ASI) Tabassum Ali was killed in Banaras Colony area in Karachi’s Orangi Town No 4.
The polio workers were administering polio drops to a child inside a house in Banaras Colony area when assailants opened fire on the ASI and fled the scene.
Following the attack, polio immunisation activities were suspended in various areas of the city.
Later, the Karachi Police Chief Abdul Qadir Thebo visited Orangi Town crime scene where the ASI Tabassum Ali was killed during attack on the polio team.
The Karachi Police Chief said that target killings of policemen have increased in Karachi, adding that the operation will be expedited.
Thebo also recommended a three-day pillion riding ban in the city in order to effectively launch the anti-polio drive.
Anti-polio drive begins in Balochistan’s 28 districts
Meanwhile, an anti-polio drive began on Monday in 28 districts of Balochistan province.
However, the polio campaign was not launched in Zhob, Qila Saifullah, Sheerani and Loralai districts for security reasons.
