Differences emerge in PML-N over distribution of Senate tickets, Pir Sabir Shah resigns

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The differences have emerged in the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) over distribution of tickets to its candidates for contesting upcoming Senate elections.

The sources said that the PML-N President in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the former provincial Chief Minister Pir Sabir Shah has announced his decision to step down from the post.

His decision to resign as PML-N president in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa came because he was angry over not getting his party’s ticket for Senate elections.

It comes a day after the PML-N announced the names of its 20 candidates for contesting upcoming Senate elections.

In a statement on Wednesday, the party’s spokesman Tariq Azeem said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif awarded senate tickets to the contestants after consulting with the parliamentary board.

The PML-N ticket to contest Senate elections from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was given to Lieutenant General (retd) Salahuddin Tirmizi, rather than Pir Sabir Shah who served as the 18th Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from October 20, 1993 to February 25, 1994.

The Senate elections will take place on March 5 during which 52 new lawmakers will be elected for the 104-member upper house.
