ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena said that Pakistan is a sincere friend and brotherly country, adding that the whole Sri Lankan nation respect Pakistan.

In a meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Mamnoon Hussain in Islamabad on Tuesday, the Sri Lankan president thanked him on Pakistan’s support in the United Nations Security Council and UN human rights forum.

During the meeting, the two presidents agreed on further strengthening bilateral cooperation in defence and security fields.

On the occasion, President Mamnoon Hussain said that Pakistan wants constructive, sustained and result-oriented dialogue with India on all issues including Kashmir.

“Pakistan believes in friendly relations with all its neighbouring countries,” the president said.

President Mamnoon expressed the confidence that signing of various memorandums of understanding (MoU) and agreements with Sri Lanka in different fields will further enhance bilateral relations.

The president said that Pakistan and Sri Lanka need to work together to turn South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) into a model regional organization.

The Sri Lankan president is currently in Islamabad on a three-day official visit to Pakistan.

On Monday, Pakistan and Sri Lanka agreed to enhance bilateral trade up to $1 billion per annum besides increasing cooperation in various other fields.

The two countries signed six agreements with an objective to enhance mutual cooperation in the fields of sports, shipping, tourism, economic development, anti-narcoticis and disaster management.
