PESHAWAR, Pakistan: A special three-day anti-polio campaign began in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Monday under the Sehat Ka Ittehad programme.

During the campaign, a total of 1.463 million children under the age of five years are being administered anti-polio drops in 20 districts.

The children of temporarily displaced persons (TDPs) of Khyber, North and South Waziristan agencies and Afghan refugees are also being administered anti-polio vaccine.

The provincial health department has constituted 4,240 mobile and 395 fixed and 141 transit teams for this purpose.

Anti-polio drive cancelled in four districts

Meanwhile, the anti-polio drive has been cancelled in four districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to poor performance in the previous campaign.

A source in an emergency operation centre (EOC) for polio of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa health department said that the ongoing three-day anti-polio campaign was stopped in Buner, Swat, Lakki Marwat and Swabi districts.

The source said that polio teams did not reach the targeted number of children in the four districts despite having complete facilities and arrangements.

In addition, he said that the concerned authorities of the said districts have been called for explanation. It will be decided after the meeting when the drives will be launched in the districts.
